The African American Stereotype

"When capable black college students fail to perform as well as their white counterparts, the explanation often has less to do with preparation or ability than with the threat of stereotypes about their capacity to succeed" - Claude M. Steele

Generalizations about the behaviour of African Americans originated primarily in American culture. They are derived from how slave owners used to view slaves. These stereotypes are negative in most of the cases. The current stereotypes include criminal, poor, athletic, religious and musically gifted.
